There’s a lot of confusion on the subject of Eternal security, some believe you can turn away from God & lose your salvation, some believe if you turn back to a sinful life, you were never saved to start with & some believe once your saved, it doesn’t matter how you live you cannot possibly lose you salvation.
I know that this is a hot button issue & as a result a lot of preachers shy away from the topic.
I know it can be a polarizing topic & some people get very angry when someone disagrees with them on the topic.
So even if you don’t agree with me even after reading all of the scriptures please listen to the warning towards the end of my message.
I’m going to start with some scriptures that appear to support eternal security.
John 6:47 "I assure you, anyone who believes in me has eternal life.
Satan believes in Jesus, you know what’s in store for him, one third of the angels believed in Jesus & they were booted out of heaven. So evidently there’s more to it than just believing.
Jesus told Nicodemus you must be born again; he told the rich man you must obey Gods commandments.
We need to obey all of God's word, we can’t just pick & choose what scriptures we want to obey.
John 10:28 I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one will snatch them away from me, for my father has given them to me, and he is more powerful than anyone else. So, no one can take them from me.
That’s true, no one will snatch you from God but that doesn’t mean that you can't turn away from God!
The story of the prodigal son shows how God sees us when we turn away!
Luke 15:11 Jesus told them this story: "A man had two sons. The younger son told his father, 'I want my share of your estate now, instead of waiting until you die.' So, his father agreed to divide his wealth between his sons. "A few days later this younger son packed all his belongings and took a trip to a distant land, and there he wasted all his money on wild living. About the time his money ran out, a great famine swept over the land, and he began to starve. He persuaded a local farmer to hire him to feed his pigs. The boy became so hungry that even the pods he was feeding the pigs looked good to him. But no one gave him anything. "When he finally came to his senses, he said to himself, 'At home even the hired men have food enough to spare, and here I am, dying of hunger! I will go home to my father and say, "Father, I have sinned against both heaven and you, and I am no longer worthy of being called your son. Please take me on as a hired man."' "So he returned home to his father. And while he was still a long distance away, his father saw him coming. Filled with love and compassion, he ran to his son, embraced him, and kissed him. His son said to him, 'Father, I have sinned against both heaven and you, and I am no longer worthy of being called your son.' "But his father said to the servants, 'Quick! Bring the finest robe in the house and put it on him. Get a ring for his finger, and sandals for his feet. And kill the calf we have been fattening in the pen. We must celebrate with a feast, for this son of minewas dead and has now returned to life. He was lost, but now he is found.'
(it said he wasted his inheritance; our inheritance is eternal life!
It said he was lost; we call those that aren’t Christians lost!
It said he was dead to him, If I say “you’re dead to me, that means I disown you, so it probably means that he was no longer considered part of the family! And If I'm not part of Gods family they I'm not going to heaven!)
Matthew 18:12 "If a shepherd has one hundred sheep, and one wanders away and is lost, what will he do? Won't he leave the ninety-nine others and go out into the hills to search for the lost one?
Again, this was one of his sheep, and now it is Lost! That is why he had to go after it.
If you believe in OSAS, why would he need to go after it? It would never be LOST!
Next are some scriptures that I believe prove that people can turn their backs on God & lose their salvation.
2 Peter 2:20 And when people escape from the wicked ways of the world by learning about our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and then get tangled up with sin and become its slave again, they are worse off than before. It would be better if they had never known the right way to live than to know it and then reject the holy commandments that were given to them. They make this proverb come true: "A dog returns to its vomit," and "A washed pig returns to the mud."
When we backslide, when we turn away from God, that’s how God views it…….
James 5:19 My dear brothers and sisters, if anyone among you wanders away from the truth and is brought back again, you can be sure that the one who brings that person back will save that sinner from death and bring about the forgiveness of many sins.
He’s clearly talking about someone who was serving the Lord and turned away. And he says that they need to turn back to him!
Proverbs 14:14 Backsliders get what they deserve; good people receive their reward.
John 15:5 I am the vine; you are the branches. Those who remain in me, and I in them, will produce much fruit. For apart from me you can do nothing. Anyone who parts from me is thrown away like a useless branch and withers. Such branches are gathered into a pile to be burned.
Proof that we can turn away from God and get sent to Hell!
Matthew 24:10 And many will turn away from me and betray and hate each other. And many false prophets will appear and will lead many people astray. But those who endure to the end will be saved.
1 John 3:15 Anyone who hates another Christian is really a murderer at heart. And you know that murderers don't have eternal life within them.
This couldn't be clearer, A Christian that hates another Christian is a murderer in God's eyes and he doesn't have eternal life which means he will go to hell, unless he turns from that sin!
Revelation 21:8 But cowards who turn away from me, and unbelievers, and the corrupt, and murderers, and the immoral, and those who practice witchcraft, and idol worshipers, and all liars, their doom is in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur. This is the second death."
Notice he doesn't distinguish between Christian and non-Christian, everyone who is still involved in any of those sins will experience the second death which is an eternal separation from God & everything that’s good.
What about Grace?
Grace isn’t a license to sin.
Prior to grace our sins were permanently on our record, grace allows us to be completely forgiven for our sins IF, we turn from our sin and ask for forgiveness, making us pure again in the sight of God.
Jude 1:4 Some godless people have wormed their way in among you, saying that God's forgiveness allows us to live immoral lives. The fate of such people was determined long ago, for they have turned against our only Master and Lord.I must remind you, and you know it well, that even though the Lord rescued the whole nation of Israel from Egypt, he later destroyed every one of those who did not remain faithful. And I remind you of the angels who did not stay within the limits of authority God gave them but left the place where they belonged. God has kept them chained in prisons of darkness, waiting for the day of judgment. And don't forget the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah and their neighboring towns, which were filled with sexual immorality and every kind of sexual perversion. Those cities were destroyed by fire and are a warning of the eternal fire that will punish all who are evil.
This is talking about a lot of the Preachers today that are telling people they can live in sin and still go to Heaven!
Romans 6:15 So since God's grace has set us free from the law, does this mean we can go on sinning? Of course not! Don't you realize that whatever you choose to obey becomes your master? You can choose sin, which leads to death, or you can choose to obey God and receive his approval.
This scripture shows that we have a choice to live a life pleasing to God or not. But we will face the consequences for our decision.
Romans 8:12 So, dear brothers and sisters, you have no obligation whatsoever to do what your sinful nature urges you to do. For if you keep on following it, you will perish. But if through the power of the Holy Spirit you turn from it and its evil deeds, you will live.
Warning!
If you tell someone that they can't possibly lose their salvation, so they keep on sinning. If you're wrong when they stand before God, he will tell them to "depart from me you worker of inequity", and they will spend eternity in Hell!
If I tell someone that they can lose their salvation and they keep on sinning, if I'm right or If I'm wrong, when they stand before God, he will tell them "Enter in my good and faithful servant" and they will go to Heaven! So this is clearly the safest option even if you don't believe all the evidence I have shown through scripture.
